‘I never judge players when the game is over’ – Franca and Rak-Sakyi have appearances assessed by Palace boss after Newcastle defeat

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says he will not be judging Matheus Franca and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from their second-half substitute appearances against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Brazilian attacker Franca came on for his debut in the 70th minute, replacing Will Hughes in the 70th minute at St James’ Park.

The 19-year-old took a shot from distance and made three key passes during his 20-minute stint.

Franca had to wait for his first appearance in a red and blue shirt after a stress fracture was detected in his medical before signing a five-year deal from Flamengo during the summer.

Rak-Sakyi replaced Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 59th minute and had one of Palace’s better chances towards the end of the match.

The Eagles fell to a 4-0 defeat.

When asked about their cameos, Hodgson said: “I never judge players when the game is over. 

“The game was over at half time – it’s a wonderful time. “I’m pleased for them that they got a bit of football – it’s handy.

“If I were them and you’re going to start writing how good they were in that 15 to 20 minutes, I would advise them not to read the newspapers.”
