‘It was not a lucky point’ – Crystal Palace boss believes his side deserved the win in Newcastle draw
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner believed his side’s performance merited more than their late equaliser as they picked up a late point in a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle on Saturday.
Newcastle scored what they thought was the match-winner seven minutes into the start of the second half when Marc Guehi, who was subject to multiple bids from Eddie Howe’s side in the summer, turned Anthony Gordon’s cross into his own goal.
But Guehi crossed for Daniel Munoz at the back post in the 93rd minute and the Colombian wing-back salvaged a point by heading past Nick Pope, with boss Glasner sprinting down the touchline to celebrate with his players.
The Eagles had 16 shots and limited the away side to just one effort all game.
Despite the late equaliser, Palace have still only won just once in 13 Premier League games and face a huge week of fixtures – heading to fellow relegation rivals Ipswich on Tuesday and then hosting Manchester City next Saturday.
“The result is not a good result when we look at the performance,” said Glasner.
“The performance was very, very positive. We had 16 shots in 100 minutes against Newcastle. We only allowed them one finish all game.
“We deserved more today with how the players played and the chances we created.
“When you score an equaliser in the 94th minute, you have to be happy with it. We are, but the feeling is not that it was a lucky point.
“The feeling is more that we lost two points today because the performance was really very good.”
