‘It would be huge honour’ – Ryan Leonard the red-hot favourite to be win Millwall’s Player of the Year award

Ryan Leonard looks set to have cause for a double celebration at the culmination of this season – with Millwall securing Championship safety and also being voted their Player of the Year.

The Lions will announce their award winners after today’s match against Plymouth, their final fixture at The Den this season.

And Leonard, 31, is the red-hot favourite to win the top accolade for the first time since he joined the South Londoners from Sheffield United in 2018.

He was voted man of the match in Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Sunderland which also made mathematically sure that Millwall could no longer be dragged into the relegation zone.

Leonard won Player of the Year three times at Southend United.

Asked what it would mean to repeat the feat at Millwall, Leonard told the South London Press: “Obviously it would be a huge honour and a huge achievement for myself.

“I did it at Southend, which was really nice. If you look at the players who have won it here at Millwall since I’ve been here they have been great players and great professionals.

“The fact it comes from the fans, who are coming to games and travelling the country, is humbling in itself. I’d like to think my performances would have warranted me to do well this year but there are no guarantees – we’ve had lads who have been stand out as well.”
