Local boy Kayne Ramsay felt right at home as he netted crucial away winner for Charlton Athletic at Leyton Orient
Charlton Athletic’s match winner in the dramatic turnaround away at Leyton Orient had the shortest journey home after the game.
Addicks defender Kayne Ramsay popped up with his first goal in Charlton colours deep into added-time at Brisbane Road, only minutes after Macaulay Gillesphey had dragged the South Londoners level.
The Hackney-born 24-year-old’s late header saw the Addicks leapfrog Orient into League One’s top six – and he felt right at home scoring it.
Ramsay explained: “I literally live six minutes away. I grew up here. This is my first time playing at the stadium, but this is me playing at home. Everyone was here. Family and girlfriend were here.
“The first one, for Macca’s goal, I was nearly on it. The keeper fell and Macca scored. And I’m like, I’m going to make the same run again. And luckily, I’m seeing it coming. And then it’s just gone past the keeper. I was like, this is mine. I just concentrated and scored. What a feeling. Second professional goal in my career. First goal for Charlton.
“We all know what this game meant to us. And getting three points here is massive, considering where we are. And we’re pushing for it.
“When we got in, we all just started screaming, just cheering, screaming, loud music. It’s what it means. It’s what matters.”
Charlton had trailed for almost the entirety of the second half after Jordan Brown’s thunderous volley gave Orient the lead shortly after the restart.
But Ramsay says there was always a belief in the side that the Addicks could get back into the contest.
“It shows the character we’ve got, that I’ve got,” he added.
“The team, the way we’re playing, the way the gaffers got us playing. To the last minute, we’ll keep going. We showed many times this season, we can keep going all the way to the game. It’s not 90 minutes long. You’ve got added time. You’ve just got to keep going.
“When you get the first one and you can see there’s still three or four minutes left, there’s still a chance. And when we got the corner, we’re all going for it. Everyone’s in the box. We’re all going for it. All it takes is one chance and it’s a goal.
“There’s not a better time to do it. Especially now, we’re going into March now. There’s 13 games left. We’ve just got to, game by game, we play on the five-game structure. We’ve just got to keep going and keep picking up as much points as possible. Every game is winnable. We’ve just got to show the right desire, the right character, like we did today. And just keep pushing.”
