Martin Sandgaard to stay in UK – with his focus purely on football side of Charlton Athletic

Thomas Sandgaard has confirmed his son Martin will stay in the UK for the longer term – with his focus on the football side of Charlton Athletic.

Sandgaard has worked for more than 14 years for Zynex Medical, his father’s business, rising to the position of production and supply chain manager.

But since Nigel Adkins’ departure as Addicks boss, the younger Sandgaard has been based in London. He has been a regular visitor to the club’s Sparrows Lane training ground as well as attending matches.

Charlton owner Sandgaard told the South London Press: “We were looking in the first week or two to see [how it worked]. Sometimes when you are this far away, on the other side of the ocean, you feel like no-one ever listens to you and everyone goes about their business – regardless of what I tell them to do.

“We’ve decided that Martin is staying there. He is entirely focused on the football side of things, not the business side of things. We have a number of people here from the US who are supporting the business side of Charlton. I have several people from the US putting in eight hours a day to support the business side, focusing on things like the Fill The Valley campaign.

“Martin played a little bit with QPR on a trial basis and he played in north London at Enfield for a little while.

“He’s a brilliant football player. He reads the game better than anybody. He has an amazing shot. He didn’t end up playing professional football. He got tired of it and a bit lonely in London, he ended up coming back to the United States.

“He’s back now and has an amazing understanding of modern football, maybe more than traditional English football.”

  • Perhaps then, Martin should be overseeing the offering of a contract to Jackson to be the manager of Charlton Athletic. He certainly deserves it. Like Bowyer, he has an affinity with both club and fans, in fact, perhaps even more so than Bowyer. After 5 games, where, not only has the level of performance increased, but also the accumulation of points – 13 out of a possible 15. With wins against top opposition like Sunderland and Plymouth and a ‘winning’ draw against Rotherham, it is a ‘no brainer’ if Jackson is not offered the job of manager of Charlton. If not, it could be one of the biggest mistakes that Sandgaard ever makes. The fans would never forgive him!! It is a simple as that.

  • Ominous undertones to Thomas’s comments about his son Martin about “knowing football. Reminiscent of Duchalet’s early days of “knowing football” with his ideas of transferring players inferior players to Charlton unannounced, a where “customers” were not supporters or fans. Thomas has done well so far – please don’t mess to much with the “football side” – Martin.
