Millwall boss asked if there are enough strong characters in his squad as Championship drop fears intensify

Millwall head coach Joe Edwards has been asked if he has characters in his squad when the Championship going gets tough.

The Lions have lost six of their last seven matches and are deep in relegation danger – especially so after QPR’s victory at Bristol City moved them only a point behind the South Londoners.

Millwall could drop into the bottom three next weekend when they head to Southampton.

The Lions players have been unable to respond to setbacks – the 2-0 defeat to struggling Sheffield Wednesday is the most recent example.

Asked if he had enough character in his playing group, Edwards said: “At the moment we are not responding well as a team on the pitch, that’s for sure.

“Day to day at the training ground there are some great characters in the way they conduct themselves and try to lead it – try to galvanise it and get us out of this situation. They are a pleasure to work with in comparison to other squads that I’ve seen, been around or worked with.

“But the training ground doesn’t really get you any points, does it? It has to be seen on the pitch. At the moment we’re not responding well enough to setbacks – it’s a clear fact.”

Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi has missed the last two matches due to illness.

“He’s just been unable to shake it off,” said Edwards. “Again, another disappointment. When it rains, it pours.

“You bring someone like Mike in to have a really big impact to our team – add some pace and add some goals. He was rusty in his first game but he stepped up and looked a bit sharper against Coventry, he has a couple of shots, and then you lose him for two important games through an illness. That has kind of been our period recently.”
