Nathan Jones explains Tennai Watson’s absence for victory over Barnsley

Nathan Jones says Charlton Athletic’s right-sided defender Tennai Watson has been given a few days off to try and recover from his recent fatigue.

The former Milton Keynes man, 27, missed Saturday’s home victory over Barnsley after being withdrawn from the goalless draw with Stevenage on Easter Monday due to “tightness”. Kayne Ramsay took his place – the January signing from Harrogate Town making his first appearance in nearly two months due to a hamstring complaint.

Jones explained: “[Watson] keeps coming off. He keeps playing through fatigue and other things. Sooner or later we’ve got to go. We haven’t had that other right wing-back to be able to do that. With Kayne, we can take him out and try to get him back to full-fitness so he can last 90 minutes.

“[Watson has] given us everything, fair play. But we can’t keep bringing him off every time and not get to the bottom of this fatigue. We’ve had to take him out of everything and give him a few days off. Hopefully he’ll be fresher on Monday.

“[Ramsay] was excellent. To come back in after nearly two months out and with the extent of his injury. He’s looked really good in training. To really push to start, I’m really delighted with him. I’ve probably only worked with him four 14 days so that’s a lot more to come from him. He has the profile we like so, lets see.”
