Nathan Jones praises Alfie May after Charlton striker grabs League One golden boot
Charlton forward Alfie May has finished as League One’s top scorer – earning praise from boss Nathan Jones.
The striker, signed from Cheltenham Town in a £250,000 deal last summer, has bagged 23 league goals over the course of the campaign – finishing two ahead of Portsmouth’s Colby Bishop.
He was unable to add to his tally during the final day defeat at Wycombe, but Jones was pleased his leading marksman was able to grab a personal gong.
The striker was withdrawn at half-time at Adams Park.
Jones said: “Alfie has showed that he can be a good goalscorer at this level. To have the golden boot he must have done something right. To do it in a struggling side shows that he has.
“I’m probably the wrong person to ask after today’s performance in terms of stuff – because it’s still raw, still fresh. But I’m delighted for him that he’s had some personal accolades this year.”
May said: “It’s been a great season for me personally. Winning the Golden Boot is something I’ve dreamt of doing and over the last couple of seasons I’ve been in and around it and been close. Coming from non-league to now being the top scorer in League One is something that will live with me forever and it’s a great achievement for me and my family.”
