‘Never a penalty in a million years’ – Wrexham boss fumes over late call in Charlton draw

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson says substitute referee Alan Dale cost his side two points with his late penalty call in their 2-2 draw with Charlton.

Dale started the game as the fourth official but came on for the injured Sam Perkiss in the first half.

With Andy Cannon’s left-footed drive in the 72nd minute putting Wrexham 2-1 up, the visitors thought they had claimed all three points.

But a handball by Max Cleworth, which saw Dale point to the spot in the 96th minute, saw Matty Godden score to bring the game level and rescue a point for the Addicks.

Former Charlton boss Parkinson told Wrexham’s website: “First of all, we should have kept the ball in the corner better, but mistakes happen.

“The ball comes in the box and the lad wins the header.

“It drops down and hits Max Cleworth on his arm, which is low and by his side – it’s never a penalty in a million years.

“We’re relying on the referee to get the one big decision in the game right, and he got it wrong.

“It’s very frustrating. The ref has cost us two points today in my opinion.

“The quality of the performance was very, very high for us today – I thought we were outstanding.

“We controlled the game for long periods and the quality on the ball was really good.

“Some of the football was very good. I feel for the lads in there because coming to a place in front of 24,000 people and handling the occasion so well, we just played with confidence and calmness.

“It was a performance which warranted three points.

“You can see the way the Charlton fans and players celebrated at the end shows what a good team we are.

“They have celebrated the point as if they have won convincingly.”
