Oliver Glasner urges Crystal Palace players to put performance at Newcastle ‘in the bin’ after heavy defeat

Oliver Glasner says his Crystal Palace side have to quickly forget their 5-0 humbling at Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The hosts took the lead after 14 minutes when Jacob Murphy picked up the ball on the right hand side and fired the ball Dean Henderson at his near post.

Glasner’s side were awarded a penalty after the half-hour mark when Nick Pope came to clear a cross into the box and clattered Chris Richards in the process. Following a lengthy VAR and on-field review, referee Darren England pointed to the spot.

Eberechi Eze missed the resulting penalty, stuttering in his run-up and rolling the ball into the palms of the Newcastle stopper.

Newcastle went up the other end three minutes later and doubled their lead on the counter-attack when Harvey Barnes’ cross deflected off Marc Guehi and wrong-footed Henderson.

Alexander Isak should have added a third when the ball fell to him inside the area in the 41st minute, but the Swedish striker shot straight at Richards and ballooned his rebound high and wide.

Barnes scored a third in the 47th minute as Palace were caught out again on the counter-attack, with the former Leicester attacker cutting past Maxence Lacroix and drilling past Henderson.

Fabian Schar scored a fourth to add to Palace’s miserable first half when he headed home a free-kick routine from a Jacob Murphy cross.

Isak made it 5-0 in the 58th minute with a stunning effort from 25 yards – taking tally of goals that the Eagles have conceded in their last two games to 10.

Palace had four shots on target but their evening was summed up late on when Adam Wharton capiatlised on a mistake at the back to set up a two player attack against Pope.

But the former Blackburn midfielder’s pass went behind Eddie Nketiah, who slipped in the box.

“They were too good in every part of the game,” said Glasner.

“This is what we have to accept. They were too quick and so direct – they punished our mistakes and took the momentum.

“It’s a disappointing night. We shouldn’t analyse tonight too much. Sometimes you have games where you need to throw it into the bin, and this is what we will do.

“It was the goal not to lose the second half, but we didn’t achieve this small goal today.

“It’s a day to forget. Tomorrow we will meet at the training ground and start preparing for Bournemouth.”
