Rugby union: Blackheath score eight tries in 52-7 win at Darlington Mowden Park

Successive away wins, and a second-half century of points, saw Blackheath ruthlessly cast aside rock bottom  Darlington Mowden Park in National League 1 on Saturday, writes Graham Cox.

The Club amassed a total of eight tries, six of them in the first period, as they consolidated their sixth position in the table with a 52-7 away win.

They piled further misery on Darlington Mowden Park who, with only one victory to their name all campaign, look destined for relegation, despite a quarter of the season still remaining.

Perhaps it was the frustration of having to make the long journey to the spacious Darlington Arena for a second time in four weeks, after the original fixture was postponed late due to a frozen pitch, but Blackheath set about their task effectively from the off.

After just two minutes, Jake Hennessey’s break from full-back sent Tex Cavubati across for the opening try.

The Club second-row and former Fijian international was involved again soon after, offloading for scrum-half Jordan Burns, who in turn found Mike Hoyt out wide, the flanker breaking through defenders to score, before props Andy Boye and Archie Holland combined for the latter to cross.

The bonus point came after just 21 minutes. Hennessy lobbed a pass out wide to skipper Tom Baldwin, the number eight finding himself in acres of space to trot over the goal-line, and hooker Billy Harding added try number five off lineout ball.

Burns sprinted over, rounding off a fine move, and with Tom Ffitch successful with five conversions, Blackheath led 40-0 at the interval.

Mowden Park have been having a difficult time both on and off the field this season but, to their credit, fought with immense spirit, stifling the one-way traffic after the restart and claiming first blood of the second period with a try from wing Harvey Johnston.

But the visitors finished firmly on top, as Hennessey added two late tries, showing a lovely change of pace for the first, before intercepting and crossing unopposed to close out the contest.

Blackheath are back on home soil tomorrow against Sedgley Park (3pm).
