Shaun Derry leaves Crystal Palace coaching role

Shaun Derry has left his role as Crystal Palace first-team coach.

The ex-Leeds, Millwall and QPR midfielder had been a part of Patrick Vieira’s coaching staff since the ex-Arsenal captain joined as manager in July 2021.

Derry was promoted to the first-team fold after he won the Premier League 2 Division 2 play-off final with the Eagles’ U23 side.

The 45-year-old, who has had managerial spells at Notts County and Cambridge United, made 222 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles across two separate spells as a player.

Derry won the First Division play-off final with Palace in 2004 and captained the side which survived relegation from the Championship in 2010 when the club were in administration.

That summer he opted to quit for QPR on a two-year contract, linking back up with former Eagles boss Neil Warnock.

Palace head to Manchester United on Saturday in the Premier League looking to end a winless run of five matches in all competitions.

But the Eagles did take a point from the reverse fixture in the middle of last month, Michael Olise’s superb free-kick snaring a late leveller.

Palace’s last win was at the end of December, 2-0 at AFC Bournemouth.

Wilfried Zaha picked up a hamstring injury in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United.

The Ivorian – out of contract in the summer – was making his 450th appearance for the South Londoners.

The 30-year-old is expected to miss a significant chunk of February. Palace follow up their Old Trafford trip by hosting bitter rivals Brighton before a trip to Brentford (February 18) and welcoming Liverpool on February 25.

Joachim Andersen (calf) remains a doubt but James McArthur and Nathan Ferguson have both returned to training.
