Sunderland booked their place in the League One play-off final – and will face either Charlton Athletic or Doncaster Rovers at Wembley next weekend.

The Black Cats drew 0-0 at Portsmouth on Thursday night. And that was enough to see them progress after Chris Maguire’s goal had earned them a 1-0 victory in the first leg at The Stadium of Light.

If Charlton manage to get the job done tonight – they lead 2-1 – then it will set up a repeat of the 1998 Division One play-off final.

That is widely-regarded as the greatest ever play-off final. Clive Mendonca – a Sunderland fan – scored a hat-trick in north London.

The Addicks won 7-6 on penalties after the match finished 4-4 after extra-time. Sasa Ilic saved Michael Gray’s spot-kick to send Charlton into the top flight.

The 2019 League One play-off final takes place on Sunday.
