‘We got punished’ – Oliver Glasner has mixed emotions after Crystal Palace’s draw at Aston Villa

Oliver Glasner had mixed emotions after Crystal Palace’s 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles took the lead after four minutes when Jean-Philippe Mateta played through Ismaila Sarr and the former Watford man used his pace to stay ahead of Ian Maatsen and slot beyond Emiliano Martinez.

Villa had the chance to take the lead before half-time when VAR spotted Will Hughes standing on Leon Bailey’s Achilles inside the penalty area, and referee Tim Robinson pointed to the spot.

But Dean Henderson went the right way to thwart Youri Tielemans and push the ball away from goal.

The Eagles went up the other end moments later through Sarr, who crossed along the face of goal for Justin Devenny to slide home his first goal for the club.

Villa equalised in the 76th minute when Ross Barkley met a corner to head past Dean Henderson and set up a grandstand final passage of the game at Villa Park.

Jeffrey Schlupp forced a brilliant save from Emiliano Martinez, but neither side were able to claim all three points.

“There are two feelings and emotions,” said Glasner.

“First of all, which is the biggest one, I’m proud of the team and the performance of the style of football we played and with all the circumstances.

“We’re missing many attacking players, but we were playing forward, creating, and we scored two fantastic goals.

“After they scored their equaliser, we still played forward and had a big chance at the end with Jeffrey Schlupp.

“It makes me really proud of how we defended together and scored our goals.

“The other feeling is a little bit of disappointment.

“We had the lead twice but conceded the second goal after a set play, which is not what you want.

“You have to accept that when you give Villa 10 corners, they are so good. They had two or three headers in the same area – the ball is like a laser. We got punished.

“Overall, I’m pleased with the performance.”
