Lee and Clifford strike to keep Charlton women top of the league

Late goals from Charlotte Lee and Charley Clifford ensured Charlton Ladies remained top of the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division with a 2-1 victory away to Lewes FC.

Head coach Riteesh Mishra’s side are now five points clear of C & K Basildon Ladies at the top of the table on 30 points, with 10 wins and two defeats from 12 league games.

The Addicks have recovered with two successive league victories since their 2-1 away defeat to C & K Basildon at the end of October.

Charlton were trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining after conceding in the first half to Kelly Newton’s strike, before Lee’s rebounded equaliser and Clifford’s low, short-range finish extended the Addicks’ unbeaten league run. Striker Charlotte Gurr, on 14 goals for the season, turned provider after coming up with assists for both goals.

She remains second top scorer for the FAWPL, while fellow striker Kit Graham has 12 goals in 14 appearances.

Charlton travel to face Enfield Town on Sunday in the Captial Women’s Senior Cup quarter-final with a 2pm kick-off at the QE Stadium.

The Addicks defeated Parkwood 7-2 in their first-round match in October who play in the South East Division 1. Charlton then return to league action to face bottom side Swindon Town at home on November 26 with a 2pm kick-off.
