Wycombe boss looking to conduct ‘autopsy’ after 4-0 loss to Charlton Athletic
Wycombe Wanderers head coach Mike Dodds hammered his side’s defending in today’s 4-0 mauling at the hands of League One promotion rivals Charlton Athletic.
Lloyd Jones and Luke Berry scored in the first half for the Addicks with Matty Godden and Karoy Anderson adding to the damage.
The result drops the Chairboys out of the second automatic promotion spot with Charlton now up to fourth ahead of Saturday’s mouth-watering trip to Wrexham, who are now in the runners-up spot following their victory against Blackpool.
Dodds – asked about the result being a setback – said: “That’s an understatement! We got what we deserved. The bit I’m going to have to autopsy is how we go from the best defensive record in the EFL since I’ve been here to gifting Charlton four goals.
“The first two goals are second phases of set-plays, which we’ve been excellent at since I’ve been here. The third goal, I can’t hide it. The fourth is a really simple ball in our box and we didn’t deal with it and we find ourselves 4-0 down.
“Charlton forced us into those errors. We have got to take this on the chin, decompress over the next few days and make sure the next two results are really, really positive. There is still everything to play for. It is a really out of character performance. I’ve got to wear that as the leader and captain of the ship. It is nowhere near the standards required.
“Charlton are one of the best in terms of second balls – really aggressive on second balls. I tried to put more physicality into the team to try and deal with that.
“I don’t want to say it – it’s a little embarrassing to say it – but I didn’t think there was a huge amount in the game. We gifted them four goals which is ridiculous.”
