Young Millwall keeper George Evans and George Saville earn boss praise after vital win over Swansea City
Millwall boss Alex Neil reserved special praise for George Saville and young goalkeeper George Evans following their crucial 1-0 victory over Swansea City at The Den.
The win marked Millwall’s fifth consecutive home triumph and kept their Championship play-off hopes alive.
Saville scored the only goal of the game in the first half — his first league goal since November 2023’s 4-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
The midfielder has played a crucial role in the last two games having created two of Millwall’s three goals against Norwich on Easter Monday.
“Everybody has been important, said Neil. “Sav has had two excellent matches, the last game and this game, in terms of how he’s affected them with his set-plays and certainly his goal today.”
Neil also highlighted the performances of young goalkeeper Evans, who has made an impressive start to life in the first team.
The 19-year-old debuted during the 4-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers but has since responded with back-to-back clean sheets and made two crucial saves to deny Swansea an equaliser.
“In those types of matches, you are going to need your goalkeeper to make a save or two,” Neil explained.
“Young George, it’s his third game, his second clean sheet on the bounce, and he’s come up trumps for us on two or three occasions when we needed him.
“When you are a young player you get given opportunities because of people getting injured or suspended, but from there you have to prove your worth — and today in particular George did that.”
