The annual Lambeth Country Show returns to Brockwell Park this weekend
The annual Lambeth Country Show returns to Brockwell Park this weekend for its 45th edition
Boasting a unique line-up that celebrates the very best of the city and countryside, with more than 100,000 in attendance last year the show is one of the biggest free family festivals in the UK.
This year, you can expect a mixture of classic Lambeth Country Show events as well as some new ones. There will be plenty of activities, live music, food and drinks stalls, dances, jousting and a popular favourite – the vegetable carving competition.
The main arena has a great line up for 2019 including The Adrenaline Tour, starring ex-world Championship motor-cross rider Jason Smyth performing motorcycle stunts, quad freestyle and huge jumps over ramps including American trucks.
Cavalry of Heroes will be showcasing jousting and a six horse Highwayman Show as well as The Essex Dog Display Team; Britain’s longest established and leading dog display team.
Lambeth’s Vauxhall City Farm will bring a little piece of the Countryside right into the heart of Brixton. You can see a variety of farm animals including llamas, ponies and sheep, all whilst speaking to the lovely and welcoming team at VCF.
As well as all the fun and music there are many socially important stalls such as Carers4Carers giving advice and Every Can Counts helping residents understand recycling.
The Livity/Inside Out stall is one that is close to the South London Press’ Lambeth Walk campaign against knife crime and will see a youth market, a music stage, talks, spoken word, art exhibitions, workshops and more.
The Black Cultural Archives, based in Windrush Square, Brixton are a regular feature at Lambeth Country Show and this year will be providing information on their new Windrush exhibition as well as discussing Black British history.
Arike Oke, Managing Director of the Black Cultural Archives, said: “We’re regular attendees to Lambeth Country Fair and it’s always important for us to attend so that we can bring a little bit of Black British History outside of our building and into the community.
“We’ll be sharing information about our latest exhibition, Windrush: Looking Back, Moving Forward with activities for families. It’s an opportunity to learn more about how Windrush is affecting our communities and how to support them.
“We’ll also be bringing our incredible timeline which documents hundreds of years of Black British History from the 1800s to present day.”
The Discovery Zone is back once again and has a vast array of fun and educational content from company Immersive Experiences who will be offering VR experiences, planetariums and drone experiences.
New for this year is Reach The Core who will be providing medieval activities for all ages. Activities will include longbow archery and crossbows, ancient artillery, warrior training and medieval sword school.
There will be an array of stellar science partners will be on hand so you can take part in games and interact with the likes of British Pharmacological Society, Royal Society of Biology, Royal Society of Chemistry and The Institute of Cancer Research.
Another new addition to this year will be Diggerland where children will be able to have a go and take part in fun interactive challenges using mini diggers.
The long running favourite Dog and Sheep Show will be back in action as well as horticultural shows, sheep and owl displays, home grown vegetable and flower competitions, an abundance of craft and food stalls and sports activities for all the family.
As for the live music, Lambeth Country Show is staying true to its roots with a mixture of reggae, soul, jazz and funk kickstarted by Bukky Leo and Black Egypt who will be rejoicing the musical journey of Fela Kuti in style with ‘Felabration’.
Vanessa Haynes, one of the lead singers of acid jazz band Incognito, will be celebrating the life of Aretha Franklin one year on from her death on the Saturday.
Joining them will also be eclectic funk, acid jazz and electronic duo MF Robots, which is the latest project from members of the Brand New Heavies.
Imagination will be headlining on Saturday and closing the day with style performing hits such as Body Talk, Just An Illusion, Flashback and more.
The Sunday welcomes back ‘Roots Day’ to the main stage with a very special act, General Levy who is a true veteran of the UK urban music scene and will be headlining the Main Stage, closing the show in style.
Other performers throughout the day include Jamaican reggae singer Dawn Penn, fresh and upcoming roots rock reggae group Royal Sounds and SISTA: Women In Reggae bringing female reggae joy to south London.

“Every year it never fails to impress and I’m really excited for this year’s edition, with so much on offer for people of every age it’s a weekend that brings the whole Lambeth community together, showcasing the best of our borough.
“At a time when the country is more divided, the country show is about bringing people from all backgrounds together and that’s something we should definitely celebrate.
“I’ve been coming to the show for over 20 years, enjoying the music and shows and just speaking to people from all walks of life, and this year I’ll be coming along for the first time as leader of the council which will be a very proud moment.”
