“We didn’t play well enough” – Millwall boss Gary Rowett gives frank verdict after Swansea loss
Gary Rowett was left disappointed with his Millwall side after they crashed to a 3-0 defeat against Swansea in the lunchtime kick off.
Andre Ayew scored and then assisted as Jamal Lowe scored twice to ends the Swans’ run of four Championship defeats on the spin.
“I’m disappointed,” said Rowett. “There were moments in the game we needed to make go our way but they went the other way. I thought we were quite bright at the start of both halves, certainly for the first 20-25 minutes there were some really good play and good possession.”
Jake Cooper went close with an early header but that was Millwall’s best chance of the first 45 minutes. Ayew curled home the opener in first half stoppage time.
Rowett said: “They are always going to be a danger because they’ve got good players in forward areas, but to concede 20 seconds before half time when we’ve worked so hard was very frustrating.
“Swansea are a very good side when they are 1-0 up and have something to protect and they can transition on you well. Defensively they are very solid so I was not happy with that. I felt the way it came about was poor and changed the complexion of the game. We started well in the second half, we hit the post to make it level, we didn’t quite take that moment and then we made a mistake for the second goal. I don’t think we played well enough.
“You always want to score the first goal, but while the game’s at 0-0 then it’s in the balance, but we had moments in the game to go 1-0 up and we didn’t take them. We then conceded a very poor goal, now you’ve got to chase the game, when you chase the game we have to become a bit more open. We hit the post and don’t get the equaliser we then have to chase the game and put more attackers on. We put more attackers on, you leave more space for the opposition, it becomes a game of balance. If we can find the next goal then it makes it interesting.
It was a relatively quiet afternoon for Freddie Woodman in the Swansea goal with only a Ken Zohore shot in the second half to save.
“We didn’t ask quite enough questions in the final third of Swansea,” said Rowett. “What I would also say is we have to defend better for all three goals.
“Ken Zohore has a good shot, the keeper makes a fabulous save, that would make it 2-1, That would have made it interesting at the end of the game but we couldn’t find those moments today. While there were some good bits, there just wasn’t enough of that drive and desire that we’ve played with in recent weeks.”
