Whats On: coming up

A modern revival of Harold Brighouse’s Hobson’s Choice is being shown in Brockley.

Matthew Townshend Productions has given Brighouse’s Lancashire comedy a modern twist setting it in the year 1958 instead of the late 19th century.

The play, first produced in England in 1916 and seen recently in London’s West End, will be performed at the Jack Studio Theatre until September 15.

Director Matthew Townshend said: “Reviving this British classic and bringing it forward into the rock ’n’ roll era has allowed us to breathe new life into the story.

“We have stayed true to the original script but added choreography, music and a Windrush-era twist.

“We are thrilled to be performing this at the Jack Studio Theatre for this two-week stint, especially in the year that marks six decades since the playwright’s death.”

The cast includes John D Collins, best known for his starring role in TV’s hit comedy ‘Allo! ‘Allo!, who plays Henry Hobson.

Michael Brown, who started his career with three seasons in Mark Rylance’s Globe Theatre Company, plays Will Mossop, Olivier award winner Natasha Cox appears as Nurse MacFarlane and provides the choreography, and Lucy Robinson, who has just been filming the new series of Cold Feet, provides the voice of ‘Mrs Hepworth’.

On Saturday, September 29, the Erith Pier Festival will be bringing Erith’s iconic pier to life.

Head down to the river between 11am- 9pm to toast the end of the summer.

There will be food on offer from street food stalls as the Erith Kitchen moves to the pier for its last outing this summer.

Relax and listen to a line-up of local musicians against the backdrop of the riverfront. Real ales and ciders will be on offer from the Beer on the Pier tent, run by local brewers Bexley Brewery.

There will also be fun and games for children with Pirates on the Pier.

Deputy council leader Louie French said: “I hope residents and people outside the borough will come along and enjoy the Erith Pier Festival and its unique setting by the River Thames.

“Community events such as this are just one of a range of initiatives aimed at developing this part of our borough into a thriving riverside town.”

Stop The Play comes to Erith Playhouse this weekend.

Set in the rehearsal room, five neurotic actors, one overworked and stressed stage manager, one inexperienced and crazed director, an invisible playwright and an escaped monkey, battle with the task of putting on what is surely the world’s worst play, which keeps being rewritten.

And every rewrite is worse than the one before. And although It really shouldn’t, somehow, the show goes on.

Until September 15. Tickets £10.00. 38-40 High Street Erith Kent DA8 1QY. Call: 01322 350 345.

This Really Is Too Much is a medley of absurd political speeches, talent contests and box ticking.
