Young striker released by Millwall as Championship side clarify contract status of squad

Millwall have released their retained list for the 2020-21 season – with confirmation that U23 striker George Alexander will be leaving.

We broke the news on our website and South London Press edition on Friday that centre-forward Matt Smith and defender Alex Pearce had been offered reduced terms.

It was also already public knowledge last week that goalkeeper Frank Fielding and winger Shane Ferguson would not be tabled fresh deals.

Millwall are in the market for a new and younger shotstopper to provide competition to first choice Bartosz Bialkowski. QPR’s Joe Lumley was one of a number of options for the South London club but looks set to sign for Middlesbrough.

Right-back James Brown, who has been on loan at Scottish side St Johnstone in the second half of the campaign, is also moving on.

Alexander (pictured), the son of former Lions striker Gary, has been released along with a number of other U23 players – Rob Strachan, Harry Ransom, Reuben Duncan and Sam Skeffington. U18 duo Ollie Bate and Ezekiel Miller also move on.

Ryan Sandford, Joe Wright and Besart Topalloj have been offered new contracts. There are also professional deals on the table for Nana Boateng, Jordan Gillmore, Arthur Penney, Alfie Allen, Tyrese Briscoe and Abdul Abdulmalik.
