Charlton Athletic manager keeps his anger on a simmer after 2-2 draw against Lincoln City
Nathan Jones promised that he will not be making any more “safe” decisions after Charlton Athletic’s 2-2 draw against Lincoln City today.
The Addicks boss saw his side fight back from 2-0 down to share the points with mid-table opposition.
But the response in the final 30-plus minutes did little to improve his mood when he conducted his post-match press conference.
The Welshman’s anger was contained but clearly simmering just below the surface, with his answers curt.
Macauley Gillesphey and Greg Docherty scored in the second half after James Collins had bagged a brace for the Imps.
Charlton had been hunting a ninth straight home win in SE7 but had to settle for extending their undefeated run there to 13 matches.
“That’s a good point, in the end,” said Jones. We showed a lot of spirit in the last 30 minutes, no question, but before that we were a mile off.
“I take responsibility.
“The last two or three days we’ve been passive in so many decisions we’ve made and I won’t make that mistake again.”
Asked to expand on that last comment, Jones said: “It is an in-house thing. I’ve been safe in some of the decisions and I won’t do that again. I’m looking at every decision I’ve made since Tuesday night has been passive.
“How we prepared and did everything was a mile off.”
The Charlton chief also hooked Portsmouth loanee Tom McIntyre after Collins’ second goal. The former Luton Town and Derby County forward breezed past the centre-back, who had been a strong performer in the midweek victory at Mansfield.
“Their keeper has made some good saves (to keep the Addicks out) and they’ve had four shots the whole game,” said Jones. “We have allowed them to score goals – the second is as bad as we’ve ever given away.”
Charlton were once again missing vice-captain Lloyd Jones but also added Tyreece Campbell to the injury list.
Campbell, who had netted three times in the last two matches, was kept out by a calf injury.
Jones said: “It looks bigger (his absence) because we play a certain way and he gives us certain things – but he wasn’t available today, for whatever reason, and we had to find a way. We didn’t for 60 minutes.
“We were nowhere near a team that we normally are – the last 30 minutes we were and should’ve won the game. The last 30 minutes, no problem, the game-changers came on and made positive changes.”
Charlton’s hopes of securing the other automatic promotion place look dead after Wrexham’s 3-0 victory over Burton Albion today.
They dropped to fifth in the standings after the latest round of results.
“We have got to keep going game in and game out,” said Jones. “That’s all we’ve got to do.”
I thought Lincoln played well…
