Millwall manager almost took drastic action in New Year’s Day win over Ipswich Town

Millwall manager Neil Harris admitted he almost produced a managerial first in today’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

The Lions fought back in the second half to earn their first Championship away win of the season.

And Harris made a game-changing switch at the break with Steve Morison replacing the out-of-sorts James Meredith. It saw Shane Ferguson drop to left-back with the club captain playing on the right of the Lions attack.

“It was a horrendous first half,” said Harris. “I’ve got to be honest – the first half was not acceptable.

“I thought about changing the team – I don’t think I’ve ever made a sub in the first half unless it has been forced by injury or a red card. But it was probably the closest I’ve ever been to making a sub in the first half.

“We adjusted shape at half-time. I had a few choice words for the group and they responded in the second half. All five goals weren’t the greatest but we scored more than Ipswich – and that is all that mattered.

“Nine points out of nine is exactly what we need and what I demanded from the group. I can only praise my players for that.”

Veteran frontman Morison had a big hand in two of Millwall’s three goals.

“He was extremely disappointed he didn’t score the other day – he missed an open goal from six yards [against Forest],” said Harris. “But I spoke to him this morning and reminded him how important he is to us – it’s not just about goals.

“I had the ability to bring him on after a first half where we lacked leaders. I gave hima gameplan for us to use a targetman in a wide area and down the middle. The first goal certainly comes from it and the second to a degree.

“Having a natural leader and captain on the pitch certainly makes a difference.”
