‘Buzzing for the lad’ – Dons boss asked about Ryan McLean’s match winner that causes Coventry upset and sets up Chelsea tie
AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson was “buzzing” for Ryan McLean after the winger scored the winner in their 2-1 EFL Cup win over Coventry on Wednesday evening.
The 23-year-old was subbed on for his first professional appearance in the 83rd minute when he replaced James Tilley.
McLean, who signed his first full-time contract with the Dons in the summer after making his way through non-league and leaving his job in IT recruitment to pursue professional football, scored the winner in the 92nd minute.
The former Hereford attacker met Isaac Ogundere’s cross at the back post and volleyed a side-footed effort beyond Conetry keeper Brad Collins to complete the comeback.
McLean’s winner has set up a second round tie against Premier League side Chelsea.
“I’m just buzzing for the lad,” said Jackson.
“It’s been difficult for him since coming in. It’s his first taste of full-time football and what it’s like to be a professional day in, day out.
“He’s only ever played part-time before. Moving from where he is from to down here in London has been quite tough for him.
“He wasn’t involved at the weekend, so everyone in the changing room is just buzzing for him.
“To get his moment and to grab it like that is what you want from players.
“It’s given me a headache.”
