Council in urgent need of new foster carers for 25 children

A council is calling for new foster carers as new figures reveal more than 20 young people are ready to move out of their current care arrangements.

Data released today shows that about 25 children in Southwark are awaiting foster care, while numbers of carers are falling across the borough due to high retirement rates each year.

As part of Foster Care Fortnight, which runs from May 13 to 26, Southwark council has released a video which includes a poem recited by two care leavers, Louie, 23, and Rukiya, 27, dedicated to their foster carers.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, education and refugees, said: “This Foster Care Fortnight, we honour the incredible contribution of our foster carers who are each making a life-changing difference in young people’s lives. 

“They give young people an invaluable sense of security and understanding to help them grow and fulfil their full potential. Fostering might only last a short time. But the impact can last a lifetime.

“In Southwark, we are committed to making sure no child misses out on being part of a loving family. Our foster carers tell us there is nothing more rewarding than helping give a child a loving home and a happy childhood. We would love to hear from you if you feel like fostering could be the right fit for you.”

Foster carers are financially supported, assigned a dedicated social worker and ongoing training throughout their time as a carer. Carers also benefit from access to wellbeing groups and social events.
