South London falls silent to remember war heroes as it marks Remembrance Day

Across the weekend South London came together to commemorate 110 years since the outbreak of World War One, and honour all those who lost their lives in both World Wars.

In Lambeth, MPs, veterans, military personnel, and guests gathered at The African and Caribbean War Memorial in Windrush Square, Brixton, for a minute’s silence before a Military parade marched through the square.

The event marked the 10th anniversary of the memorial’s unveiling. Inscribed with the words “Remembering the Forgotten,” the memorial was created by the Nubian Jak Community Trust, endorsed by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and permanently installed on Windrush Day 2017.

Of the 17.3million service personnel who served in both World Wars it is estimated that 2million were drawn from Africa and the Caribbean.

In Lewisham, residents turned out in their hundreds to attend two services, one at Lewisham War Memorial in Lewisham High Street led by Rev. Peter Organ and the other at Deptford war memorial at the junction of Lewisham Way and Upper Brockley Road.

Wreaths were laid at both services by local dignitaries, veterans and their families, and representatives of uniformed and civilian organisations.

Across Greenwich, remembrance events took place with the Abbey Wood and Thamesmead, Blackheath and Charlton, and Eltham and Well Hall branches of the Royal British Legion.

In 2022, Greenwich council re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant at Woolwich Town Hall, a promise to ensure those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
