Hospitals open Christmas toy appeal to spread festive cheer for young patients

An NHS charity has launched its annual toy appeal to spread some festive cheer to young patients who will be too ill to go home to their families over Christmas.

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Charity has invited communities to donate toys for children who will be spending Christmas in University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

Robert Cole, head of nursing for children and young people, said: “Every child deserves to experience the joy of Christmas, and our annual toy appeal helps ensure that those who must spend the festive break in hospital are still able to feel that magic.

“We are incredibly grateful to our communities for their continued generosity. These are challenging times for many, but if you’re able to spare anything, please consider donating.

“A small gesture can make a big difference, bringing comfort and joy to a young patient at a time when they may be missing home the most.”

The appeal welcomes new toys in the original packaging for young patients aged 0 to 16 years old, during their hospital stay.

These include baby toys, educational toys, sensory items, arts and crafts sets, board games and toiletries gift sets.

The charity asks that gifts are not wrapped and cannot accept cuddly toys.

Toys can be dropped off at University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s main reception, between 10am and 3pm every day until December 22.

Margarita Vidiella, head of charity, and volunteers said: “Many of our younger patients are with us for extended periods, and your kindness helps to make their time here a little brighter. Whether you donate online via our JustGiving page or drop off a gift at the hospital, your contribution truly makes a difference.”

Donations to the Christmas appeal can also be made via  JustGiving page.
