Andros Townsend relieved to end his wait for a Crystal Palace goal

BY MATT WOOSNAM

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend revealed his relief at ending his goalscoring drought by netting in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Cardiff City.

Townsend had gone 13 Premier League games without finding the back of the net, since his goal in the 4-3 defeat by Liverpool in January. But he ended that streak in style with a thumping effort from the edge of the area.

He had carried the ball from his own half, and after Joe Bennett kindly showed him on to the inside, unleashed a shot which smashed against the inside of the post and into the back of the net to put his side 3-1 ahead and essentially seal a ninth victory on the road.

The 27-year-old felt that the team’s performance in attack mitigated defensive errors and they deserved the win.

Townsend said: “My goal has been well overdue.

“I have been below-par over the last few weeks with injury and form, so it was nice to contribute again with a goal and an assist.

“I am happy and hopefully I can get another one in the last game and end the season on a high.

“It was a good team performance from us, we made one or two mistakes defensively as a team but we got away with them due to the quality we had in the final third. We got the three points we deserved and needed.

“We knew that if we got ahead and remained patient that the game would come to us, especially with the attacking players we’ve got. We attacked in numbers and maybe left one or two spaces behind for them to counter, but we got away with it today and got the three points.”
