‘Hands down I feel it is a fight I win’ – Ellie Scotney confident of unseating IBF champion

Ellie Scotney is hoping her next fight is against IBF world bantamweight champion Ebanie Bridges after producing her most complete display yet on last weekend’s show at Greenwich’s 02 Arena.

The 24-year-old, from Catford, produced a near shutout points win over Maria Cecilia Roman to retain her WBA Intercontinental super-bantamweight title.

Scotney won it 100-90 on Gustavo Padilla’s scorecard with the other judges, Bob Williams and Jan Christen, giving the South American just one round.

Argentina’s Roman was also outpointed by Bridges in March as the Australian, nicknamed the Blonde Bomber, won the IBF belt.

Scotney looked bigger and stronger than Roman, who stepped up a weight class, but relied on her superior boxing skills and footwork to ease to a comfortable victory.

Matchroom Boxing supremo Eddie Hearn has indicated that the former amateur star should target world titles in multiple divisions.

And Scotney was quick to target Bridges next. She said: “She has spoken an awful lot. I’m not a talker, but that’s the fight I want and lets get it made.

“Hands down I feel it’s a fight I win, every day of the week. She’s the world champion and I’ve got to prove myself. I’ve got to get in there and do it.

“It’s really clicked with Shane [McGuigan, trainer] and I’m glad people saw glimpses of that. I’ve got a long way to go, I know that and Shane knows that.

“It is step by step, but I’m getting there. There’s a lot more to come. I’ve had five fights and just turned 24.”
