What’s On – Dulwich Literary Festival
Comedian Jo Brand, BBC journalist Kamal Ahmed and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin author Louis de Bernières are headlining the Dulwich Literary Festival this weekend.
The theme this year for the four-day festival is rough or protest music. The writers featured are ones who highlight injustice, fight against stereotype and make a noise about the iniquities of war, corruption, bad-faith politics, forced migration and intolerance of difference.
Exploring the current climate of global affairs will be journalists Jason Cowley (Reaching Utopia) and Isabel Hardman (Why We Get the Wrong Politicians), who will look back on their careers and what they have learned about contemporary political Britain.
Ahmed (The Life and Times of a Very British Man) will delve into the complexities of immigration and race in the 21st century, while Oliver Bullough (Money Land) and Dharshini David (The Almighty Dollar) will examine the relationship between wealth and power and the implications it has for a global future.
Music and melodies will be celebrated throughout the festival weekend. Classic FM presenter John Suchet, author of Tchaikovsky: The Man Revealed, will discuss the life, loves and friendships of one of history’s greatest composers. Louis de Bernières’ will delve into his poetry exploring human connection, the passing of time, music, and love in all its varied forms, wile opera and concert experts Jane Glover (Handel in London) and Elizabeth Nicholson will share their understanding of the work of composer George Frideric Handel.
Ticket prices range from £10 to £30, with some ticket options including a glass of wine or soft drink and a copy of the relevant book.
