Mason Burstow’s Chelsea switch confirmed – Charlton owner describes it as ‘excellent deal’
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Charlton Athletic striker Mason Burstow.
The deal will see the teenager spend the rest of the season on loan with the League One club. The terms of the transfer are undisclosed.
The 18-year-old has played just 612 minutes of senior football – but has shown enough that the Blues made a deadline day move to acquire his services.
Burstow was due to start in the Addicks’ match at Portsmouth last night but ended up missing the fixture as he negotiated a switch to the Premier League giants.
Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard said: “We’ve had a lot of interest in Mason but we only were going to let him go if it was an excellent deal for the club. Chelsea have matched our valuation and, as part of the deal, he will come back to us on loan which was important for us.”
Addicks manager Johnnie Jackson told the club’s TV channel last night: “He is someone that we love here. I’m really fond of him and love his attitude, it has been great to see him develop. We’re enjoying helping him develop and giving him the opportunities he’s had so far. It is great the club has got a deal the chairman is happy with and that we are getting him back on loan.”
The South Londoner, brought up in Woolwich and Plumstead, had trialled with Chelsea as a youngster before Charlton snapped him up. He signed his first professional contract with the Addicks in July. The following month Burstow scored with his first touch, coming off the bench in a 6-1 demolition of Crawley Town in the EFL Trophy.
In total he has netted six times in 14 senior outings for Charlton, including two in his last three League One matches.
Burstow is the latest in a long line of players to make their mark in SE7 and then land big-money moves. Others include Ademola Lookman, Ezri Konsa, Joe Gomez and Joe Aribo.
