Author Cressida Cowell campaigns to have money spent on school libraries

A children’s laureate will visit a school as part of a campaign to have money spent on school libraries.

Author Cressida Cowell will talk to pupils at Griffin Primary School, Stewart’s Road, Nine Elms, on Friday, March 4 as part of her Life-changing Library campaign.

She will renew her call on Boris Johnson for £100million annual investment in primary school libraries.

Ms Cowell launched the Life-changing Libraries with an open letter calling on the Prime Minister to help reverse the spiralling inequality in education by putting primary school libraries at the heart of our long-term response to the pandemic with a ring fenced, yearly investment of £100million.

She said: “All children deserve to have a library in their primary school and every time I speak about these shameful statistics – that one in four primary schools in disadvantaged areas do not – I am met with utter shock.”

Karen Bastick-Styles, executive headteacher of Griffin Primary School, said: “The entire school has been inspired by the opportunities of this magical space and the shelves of shiny new books, and we are looking forward to seeing Cressida and sharing some of our inspiring experiences over the past few months, and what our Life-changing Library has meant to Griffin Primary School.”
