General election 2024: Labour hold Greenwich despite gains from Reform UK
Greenwich has been held by Labour despite gains from Reform UK in all three constituencies.
With a majority of 23,999 votes in Greenwich and Woolwich, Labour Party member Matthew Pennycook will continue to serve as the constituency’s MP.
The result continues Mr Pennycook’s position as MP of the constituency, which he has held since 2015.
On social media platform X, he said: “It is an honour to be returned as the Member of Parliament for Greenwich and Woolwich.
“You have once again put your trust in me, and I will not let you down.”
Labour sailed ahead of the Green Party’s Stacy Smith, who came in second with 5,633 votes, while the Conservatives saw an 11 per cent drop in the vote share from 2019, with 4,863 votes.
Reform UK’s Abdoul Ndiaye received 3,305 votes.
Elsewhere in Greenwich, Clive Efford, representing Labour, was re-elected to his Eltham and Chislehurst constituency with 20,069 votes.
The Conservatives saw a significant 21 per cent drop in vote share compared with 2019, with 11,640 votes supporting Charlie Davis, while Reform UK took 7,428 votes for representative Mark Simpson.
In another Labour victory, Abena Oppong-Asare won Erith and Thamesmead.
Ms Oppong-Asare, who has held the seat since 2019, won 22,246 votes – a 55 per cent share.
Reform UK’s Michael Pastor came second, with 5,944 votes. Coming in third, Conservative candidate Richard Mark received just 5,564 votes, losing more than 14 per cent of the party’s 2019 vote share. The voter turnout in the area was 51 per cent.
