Greenwich wants investors to give cash boost to its green policies
Greenwich council has launched a scheme to entice investors into funding projects aimed at improving the environment.
Greenwich Green Investment is inviting residents, businesses and organisations to make low-risk investments into environmental projects in their local area from as little as £5.
In return for improving the local environment, investors can expect a return of four per cent per year on the money put in, paid every six months over the next five years.
Greenwich Green Investment will help raise vital funding for projects with positive environmental impacts, from improving parks and open spaces to installing solar panels that benefit the community.
The authority is looking to raise £1million towards making a greener borough and says the scheme is part of a wider commitment to tackle climate change and to reach net zero carbon emissions.
Councillor Anthony Okereke, leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “We’re excited to launch our Greenwich Green Investment, which will be a cornerstone for improving local communities and creating a greener, cleaner borough.
“We’ll be channelling investments made by our community back into the community, funding initiatives that contribute to tackling climate change, promoting sustainable development and protecting the environment.”
Councillor Denise Hyland, cabinet member for finance, resources and social value, said: “Climate change affects us all, which is why we believe everyone should be offered the chance to make a positive difference, no matter how small.
“This scheme offers a return through a low-risk investment while also bridging the gap created by poor access to modern and environmentally friendly infrastructure. This will allow us to support and build stronger communities.”
The money invested will help fund a range of green measures across our parks and council-owned buildings. Such as installing solar panels, decarbonising council properties, community buildings and schools and installing energy efficient street lighting.
The scheme is open to people both within and outside the borough, including residents, businesses, community groups and other interested investors.
