Pupils at the Vanguard of learning do themselves proud
Vanguard School has congratulated students on their success this summer – after their year 11 and sixth form cohorts successfully achieved a range of qualifications to help them move on to their next stage of education, training or work.
Each student at the specialist autism school in Lollard Street, Lambeth – which is part of the Liberty Academy Trust family – was supported to pursue a personalised curriculum and bespoke blend of qualifications, based on their academic stage and future aspirations.
A total of 19 students from year 10 upwards achieved qualifications, including functional skills, GCSEs and A-levels in maths, English, science, art, food tech and PE. Their successes are the result of many months of effort and hard work, during which they were assisted by experts at the school.
Among those celebrating are Ben Angus, who has been at Vanguard since it opened in January 2020 and has worked so hard to achieve English functional skills level 2, and GCSEs in English literature, English language, maths and science, and a BTEC level 2 food tech.
Ben plans on studying English A-level and on becoming a primary school teacher.
Zakaria Abdullahi, a Vanguard student since Year 8, who is moving on to Morley College to study graphic design, after achieving English functional skills level 2, maths functional skills, and GCSEs in English language and science.
Sabrina Simmonds, who also joined Vanguard in January 2020, and has worked hard to achieve English Functional Skills Level 2, as well as GCSEs in English literature and English language, maths, science and art.
Sabrina said: “I came to Vanguard when it started. I was in Year 7 and I can’t believe that I am a Year 12 student in September. I am going to study art and digital art A-levels, and hopefully, maths and English A levels. Afterwards, I would like to go to university but I still haven’t decided on a course.”
Zakari said: “I have been at Vanguard for four years. I have enjoyed my time at Vanguard, and I am sad to go but excited for my future. Next year, I will be at Morley College to study an art course.”
Stuart Parker-Tyreman, principal of Vanguard School, said: “I speak for everyone at Vanguard School when I congratulate our students on an excellent set of results. They have worked with determination and courage throughout and richly deserve their achievements, and all the success we hope they will enjoy in the future.”
Nic Crossley, chief executive of the Liberty Academy Trust, said: “Congratulations to our students, who rose to the challenge of assessments and worked really hard to overcome any additional challenges they have faced.
“Their success today demonstrates our firm belief that, given the right opportunities and support, autistic young people can achieve alongside their peers. I am so proud of all that they have accomplished and wish them enormous happiness and success as they move on to further education, training or work.”
