Restaurant providing hundreds of meals every day for NHS staff and vulnerable people during coronavirus pandemic
A restaurant kitchen has swapped its usual clientele for volunteers in an effort to provide meals for NHS staff, essential workers and vulnerable people around London.
Charity Family Meal has based itself in Fulham bar and restaurant The Little Blue Door to help out during the coronavirus crisis by preparing and delivering hot meals for the people on the front line of the pandemic.
The Family Meal team has produced more than 5,000 meals in its first two weeks of activity, and raised £20,000 for the cause.
Chef Christopher Evans-Gordon and co-founder Aidan Christofferson have set themselves a target of 600 meals a day, with the help of friends and a diverse group of volunteers.
“My team and I have been blown away by the phenomenal support we’ve received, not only in the form of monetary donations, but the enormous amount of time our friends have happily thrown into this,” Christopher said.
The group has already received substantial support on the JustGiving platform, and gained support on social media from celebrities including singer Birdy and actress Anya Taylor-Joy.
Former Home Secretary Amber Rudd has also recently joined the group as a Patron.
The pair wanted to raise awareness and galvanize support from the local community to help the essential workers, and intend to scale production to other kitchens around London.
“With the help of local volunteers working around-the-clock, we have far exceeded our initial targets” Aidan added.
