Tree-mendous time planting

About 60 volunteers helped plant 1,200 young trees at Danson Park in Welling on Saturday

Members of the Friends of Danson Park, Bexley Police Cadets, Scout groups, the Sidcup, Erith and Bexley Rotary Clubs, residents and councillors planted the whips for the second and final phase of the park’s replanting programme.

The Friends of Danson Park, Rotary Clubs and the council had claimed 2,400 trees for the park through the Mayor of London’s Greener City Fund.

All have been planted in the south of the park.

About 400 of these are expected to become well established over the next 20 years and cover just 0.5 per cent of the 75-hectare park.

Cllr Peter Craske, cabinet member for community safety, environment and leisure also helped to plant the new trees, along with Cllr Val Clark, Cllr Louie French and Cllr Nigel Betts.

He said: “Our local community groups have been a huge help inmaking the best use of the Mayor of London’s Greener City Fund for the benefit of one of Bexley’s biggest and best loved parks.

“Thanks to all the volunteers and schoolchildren who have helped to plant the smaller growing tree species. Many more generations will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of Danson Park for years to come.”
