Update: Human remains found in Mitcham river linked to body parts found in Croydon

Human remains found in Mitcham yesterday afternoon are believed to be that of Sarah Mayhew, police have said.

Officers were called around 2.20pm to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham, after human remains were found in a river by contractors carrying out cleaning work.

Following the examination of the remains, officers informed Ms Mayhew’s family of the development. Ms Mayhew was 38 and was from Croydon.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work at the scene.”

Previously, human remains found in Rowdown Fields, New Addington, on April 2, were identified as Ms Mayhew.

A spokesman from the Met said: “Anyone with information that may assist the investigation who has yet to speak with police is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1656/02Apr.”

  • Gemma Saundercock, 48, of Holmbury Grove, Croydon and Steve Samson 44, of Burnell Road, Sutton, were arrested on Saturday, April 6. They were charged with murder and the prevention of the lawful and decent burial of a body on April 9. They are next due to appear at the Old Bailey on June 27.
