Water sports charity for disabled youngsters puts on new challenges to raise cash during coronavirus crisis

A water sport centre for disadvantaged youngsters is staging three new challenges to raise funds for its work.

The AHOY Centre, a charity providing training for at-risk youths and disabled people in Deptford, has partnered with fellow commercial river user, The London Kayak Company, to offer three new Kayak expeditions on the River Thames.

These Covid compliant events provide participants a great opportunity to view some of London’s most iconic landmarks from a water-level perspective, while helping to raise funds for the AHOY’s charitable activities.

Lockdown has forced the charity to postpone its rowing challenges, a successful series of events which help to bring in more than half of its annual income to support its charitable activities.

Fundraising manager Dan O’Sullivan said: “We’re excited to be working in partnership with The London Kayak Company to offer these challenges.

“They’re a great opportunity to escape the monotony of being stuck indoors to experience the joys of the River Thames, while seeing some of London’s most iconic landmarks from a water-level perspective.

“With your support and involvement, you really will be helping us to change people’s lives, as these additional challenges will help us to raise vital funds for our charity and help us to continue to provide activities to young people and disabled adults within our community.’’

The trips were devised as a way to alleviate the feeling of isolation and boredom of 13 weeks of lockdown, giving people a chance to reconnect with the community while giving back to society.
