Woman taken to hospital after blaze rips through flat on seventh floor of block

A woman was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a flat on the seventh floor of a nine floor residential block in the early hours this morning.

Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters responded to the blaze on Marylebone Road, Marylebone, at around 3am.

A quarter of a four room flat was alight when firefighters arrived. One woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Due to the age of the building and lack of a dry rising main, the Brigade deployed a 32 metre Ladder as a temporary rising main on the outside of the building.

A dry rising main is a vertical pipe with an inlet on the outside of the building and outlets on every floor, designed to help firefighters easily access water on all floors during emergencies. 

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was first called about the incident at around 2.50am and the fire was under control by 5am. 

Firefighters from Paddington, Soho, Kensington and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. 

A spokesman from the LFB said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
