November challenges to help HM prisoners find pathway back to society

An organisation dedicated to helping the rehabilitation of released prisoners is gearing up for a week of fundraising to support its programmes.

Liberty Choir – which sings at HMP Brixton and conducts in-prison choir rehearsals on a weekly basis as part of the initiative – is challenging volunteers to take part in MojoVember from November 14-20.

Liberty Choir helps the inmate singers when they leave prison through a network of community choirs.

HMPs Wandsworth and Thameside are among other institutions which will be incorporated into the scheme in the coming months.

The MojoVember campaign will involve participants completing challenges that aim to raise £30,000 through sponsorship.

This season’s suggested activities for fundraising include walking 10,000 steps a day in seven different pairs of shoes, learning new foreign language phrases, wild-water swimming, singing in carparks, playing pieces of music as group and reading psalms at the top of seven different hills.

Actor and Liberty Choir Ambassador Jenny Agutter is taking part in MojoVember and will be learning phrases in a seven different language.

She said: “As an Ambassador for Liberty Choir, I wanted to take part in this fun way, to raise awareness and funds for this important charity, helping them support prisoners and their families at a time of year which is particularly difficult for them.”

Liberty’s Emma Gray said: “Discovering a new passion, a skill or a hidden talent can be life-affirming. And Liberty Choir want to help you to do that, whilst also helping prisoners and their families to reconnect with society.”
