Roy Hodgson asked about Ebere Eze’s Crystal Palace contract future
Roy Hodgson was asked whether extending Eberechi Eze’s Crystal Palace should be the next task after the summer transfer window.
The Eagles convinced Michael Olise to shun interest from Chelsea to put pen to paper on an improved contract at Selhurst Park.
Greenwich-born Eze has two years remaining on the initial contract he signed with the South Londoners when he joined from QPR in 2019.
England international attacker Eze has scored 20 goals and registered 13 assists in 112 appearances for the Eagles.
When asked if the goal should be to tie down the 25-year-old once the transfer window came to a close, Hodgson said: “He has a contract, doesn’t he?
“There was a time when a two-year contract was the most you ever got.
“In non-league days, we were very happy at the end of the season if a letter came through saying we had been retained, let alone two-year contracts.
“As far as I’m concerned, that [his current deal] will take care of the next two years at least.
“If the club want to go and speak to him about extending it, I will say: ‘What a good idea. Please go ahead.’
“Then it would be up to Eberechi Eze and his advisors to decide if they want to extend.
“A lot might depend – with all players of that quality – how they see the future of the club.
“We’re fortunate that Olise has seen fit to really give us a long-term commitment.
“I will be more than happy if Eze did the same thing.”
