AFC Wimbledon Women win big on the road to stay top of the league

Kevin Foster’s AFC Wimbledon side secured three points on the road as they put four past Chesham United.

Hannah Mackenzie came into the starting line-up in replace of the injured Billie Brooks.

The Dons were also delighted to welcome back Rebecca Carter, who returned to the bench after 511 days out with injury.

In the opening 15 minutes, there wasn’t much to separate the two sides.

There was chaos in the area as the Dons had countless shots at goal, only to be denied by some spectacular saves by Chesham’s Lucia Delves. It was a wonder how the away side hadn’t scored. The score remained 0-0.

Ashlee Hincks tested Lucia Delves from inside the box, and she again stopped the Dons from taking the lead in the game as she tipped the ball out for a corner.

Ellie Dorey tried her luck from range, but her effort fizzed over the bar. Almost half an hour into the game, Ashlee Hincks broke the deadlock, as she produced an excellent strike from 25 yards out.

The ball was played in from Emily Donovan, and Ashlee’s shot looped over the goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner. The score was Chesham United 0-1 AFC Wimbledon Women.

The Dons took control of the first half as Ashleigh Goddard doubled the team’s lead, as she calmly slotted the ball home from close range. The Dons had a 2-goal lead at half-time as the score was Chesham United 0-2 AFC Wimbledon Women.

The second half started out cagey, as Chesham attempted to grow back into the game. They created their first chance of the game, which was gathered safely by Lauren Allen.

Ashlee Hincks sent in a searching ball from the corner flag that was met bravely by Hannah Mackenzie, who powerfully headed the ball into the back of the net to score her first league goal for the Dons. The score was Chesham United 0-3 AFC Wimbledon Women.

As the clock ticked round to the hour mark, Kevin Foster made his first change, as Skye Bacon was replaced by Sandra Soares Martins. Not long after, Molly Childerhouse came on in place of goal scorer Ashleigh Goddard.

After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the Dons were delighted to welcome back Rebecca Carter, who was introduced in the last ten minutes in place of Fran Ali.

As full-time loomed, Ellie Dorey made it 0-4 to the Dons with a superb strike from outside the area.
