Corey Blackett-Taylor feels he is improving as he comes to terms with wing-back role

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Corey Blackett-Taylor reckons he is growing into the wing-back role he is being asked to play by Charlton boss Johnnie Jackson.

The Addicks wideman impressed during Saturday’s 1-0 triumph at lowly Doncaster Rovers, setting up the winning goal for Jayden Stockley and also winning a penalty kick during the first-period that was ultimately missed by Conor Washington.

Jackson’s preferred 3-5-2 system means his wide players operate as wing-backs rather than traditional wingers but Blackett-Taylor says he’s relishing the challenge.

“I am, to be fair,” said the former Aston Villa youngster when speaking to Charlton TV.

“I’ve never played it before. I think when I first played it, I struggled a bit because I was getting used to it, but I’ve been working in training on it. Now, in games it is paying off.

“Positioning, doing things on the training pitch and then looking at things when we do analysis. A lot of the sessions do help. Then, game after game, the more you play the more you’ll get better at it. That’s how I feel like I’ve improved.”

The Addicks made it three wins on the spin with victory at the Eco Power Stadium and Blackett-Taylor was pleased he was able to play a big part in the win.

He added: “I thought I played well, especially in the first-half where I got a lot of the ball. The game changed a bit in the second-half, they had a bit more momentum. But I was happy with my performance throughout the whole game.

“In terms of attacking threat I believe in my ability to create chances and score goals. That’s what I’m in the team to do. I feel, as of late, I’m definitely doing that.

“We’ve got seven games to go now and I feel like we just need to keep playing like we’ve been playing. We’ve got a lot of togetherness in the camp. We’ve said to ourselves lets finish the season strong.

“Personally, I just want to keep playing well. I want to play every game from now until the send of the season, keep getting 90 minutes. Try and get goals and assists, help the team. I feel it fits with the team goals as well. We want to keep getting clean sheets, we got another clean sheet today. Keep winning and get as high up the table as we can.”
