Crystal Palace boss confirms key injury update on Eze and Wharton after Aston Villa EFL Cup win

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Eberechi Eze was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 2-1 EFL Cup round of 16 win at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Eze scored the opener with a pinpoint header behind Joe Gauci, but he was forced off nine minutes later and replaced by Daichi Kamada.

The Eagles head to Wolves – after picking up their first Premier League win against Tottenham on Sunday – on Saturday evening.

Adam Wharton, who is managing a groin injury, played 88 minutes in the win over Spurs.

He made his first EFL Cup start of the season at Villa Park but was forced off in the 27th minute and replaced by Jeffrey Shlupp.

Daichi Kamada scored the winner in the 64th minute to book Palace’s place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time since the 2011-12 season, losing in the semi-finals under Dougie Freedman at Cardiff on penalties.

The Eagles head to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

“Ebs is too early,” said Glasner on whether he will be involved at Molineux.

“He wanted to [come off]. He signalled to us. He said it wasn’t possible to continue.

“I hope that it’s not too serious but I don’t know. It’s not the best information that I got today that Ebs had to leave the pitch.”

“With Adam, I’m very positive because it’s nothing new. I have spoken about it many times – he’s had this groin problem for months.

“We thought that needed a break today but yesterday he gave me the thumbs up that he was fine.

“We did it well against Tottenham, so we wanted to keep most of the team. Ismaila Sarr [was left out] because he had so many sprints against Tottenham.

“We were a little bit concerned he could get an injury, so that’s why he was on the bench.

“It was a great team performance.”
