Dillian Whyte determined to fight again – and claims ref was at fault for not penalising Tyson Fury ‘push’
Dillian Whyte has vowed to return after his failed attempt to win the WBC world heavyweight title and claimed that Tyson Fury illegally sent him to the canvas in Saturday’s bout at a sold-out Wembley Stadium.
The 32-year-old challenger, from Brixton, hit the canvas from a right uppercut. Although he beat the count, referee Mark Lyson called the contest off.
But Whyte claims that Fury pushed him down and that was the telling factor in terms of damage.
“The uppercut landed and I was buzzed,” Whyte told Sky Sports Boxing. “I was trying to regain my senses and he full-on pushed me, I hit my head on the canvas – which is illegal.
“This isn’t wrestling but, as usual, they let Fury get away with what he wants.
“I should have been allowed extra time to recover and then carry on fighting. I got caught by a good shot, no doubt. I was hurt, but I didn’t go straight down. Two-handed he pushed me, I fell over and hit my head. It was a terrible job from the referee there, but it is what it is.
“I should have had time to recover and go to my corner.
“I hope he [Fury] doesn’t retire – because I want another go. He told me afterwards that I’m going to be world champion one day. I showed up and I fought. I gave him as many problems as he gave me – it wasn’t a one-way street.
“I’m not one of those guys who wants to go out on a loss or a bad performance. I’m still young enough, still got a lot left in me and I’m still getting better. I fought the best in the world and was not outclassed. His range is a bit trickier for me, it is hard to get guys to prepare for him because he is awkward.
“I landed my fair share and I didn’t get bashed up for four or five rounds, or completely outclassed and [then] it is time to call it a day. I wasn’t outclassed.
“It is not a long, hard road back because I showed the level I am and we sold 90,000-odd tickets together. I had a value going in and I’ve had lots of pay-per-views that have all sold out and all been good fights. One fight and I’m back.”
