Exclusive: Shaun Williams set to be player-coach at Millwall as Rowett’s backroom moves take shape

Shaun Williams is set to become a player-coach at Millwall as part of Gary Rowett’s backroom rejig.

The South London Press understands that the 33-year-old, capped three times by the Republic of Ireland, has impressed with his tactical knowledge.

Williams is hugely experienced with 266 appearances for the Lions.

Adam Barrett will be appointed permanently as assistant manager after initially taking the role on a caretaker basis following Callum Davidson’s exit to take charge at St Johnstone.

Kevin Nugent, who stepped up to be temporary first-team coach, will go back to managing the U23s.

Williams took his UEFA B coaching badge last summer and told the South London Press in February that he wanted to remain in the game once his career ended.

He said: “I’d definitely be interested in staying in football. It’s been my life and I think I can help others progress in their careers. I think I’d be a coach – not a manager.

“Some of the sessions that staff have put on now I’ve taken down. I’ve done sessions every day for years, but to remember them now is another thing because I’m getting closer to that step.”

Williams is seen as one of the respected leaders in the dressing room and ideally suited to a first-team coaching role. He made 34 appearances last season for the Lions.

His focus will still be on playing but he will now step into staff meetings and have a focus on aiding the development of young players.

Rowett is also in the process of adding another staff member to his backroom team – but that is not on the coaching side.

It is believe that the individual will be someone who has a deep understanding of sports science who can also supply feedback and data reports to players.

The role does not affect Joe Carnall, who is one of Rowett’s most trusted lieutenants. He came in as technical coach when Rowett was appointed by the Lions and is always on the bench for first-team matches.
