Ice-hockey: Streatham sweep aside Romford Buccaneers

Streatham RedHawks continued their winning start to the season with a 7-1 home victory over Romford Buccaneers on Saturday, writes Christopher Beal.

Ryan Watt scored the first of his two goals on the night to break the deadlock in the 10th minute and the South Londoners added to their haul early in the second period through Harvey Stead.

Stead’s defensive partner Brendan Baird added Streatham’s third on 24 minutes.

Romford clawed a goal back through Donald Campbell but Streatham restored their three-goal advantage on 33 minutes, Danny Ingoldsby netted his fifth of the season.

George Norcliffe and JJ Pitchley both helped themselves to goals to make it 6-1 after 49 minutes.

Watt put the final touch on a night that saw the RedHawks captain score his 600th point in league play.

Streatham have bolstered their options in net, welcoming academy graduate Brett Shepherd back to the club from Berkshire Bees. The 24-year-old shot stopper was handed a start against Romford.

Streatham player-coach Ben Paynter said: “We were good, considering we’d had a weekend off last week.

“Romford are good – they have a good team and several key guys who skate well. We identified those players and what we wanted to do against those players and executed that well.

“I’m pleased with our performance. They are a hard-working team, they battle and get stuck in.

“It’s nice to play a team that wants to be there, and is hard to play against but ultimatelywe outplayed them in key areas and got the job done.”

Streatham head to fellow title contenders Chelmsford Chieftains tomorrow before a visit to Slough on November 2.

Their next home game is against Solent Devils on November 3.
