‘Long-term’ – Patrick Vieira confirms Crystal Palace midfielder set for extended injury lay-off

Patrick Vieira has confirmed that Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after describing his current injury as “long-term.”

The 34-year-old featured in friendlies against QPR and Gillingham but has missed the start of the campaign after he picked up a groin injury during pre-season training.

Scottish midfielder McArthur only featured 23 times in all competitions under Vieira in the 2021-22 season after he tore his hamstring following the 2-0 win against Wolves on November 6.

McArthur, who has made 249 appearances and scored 19 times for the Eagles since joining in 2014, signed a new one-year contract extension over the summer to prolong his stay at Selhurst Park until the end of this season.

“It looks like it will be long-term,” said Vieira on the timeframe of McArthur’s injury.

“He’s progressing, but maybe not as quickly as I would have liked. There is still a long way to go.

“He still wants to play. He is an important player for us because of his experience, his character and his positivity.

“He is an important figure for the football club. The injury is frustrating for him, myself, and the team, as we miss him on the field. He has to take his time to recover. Hopefully, he will get back and play again.

“We miss his energy and his experience. When you look at the way we play and manage games, those experienced players help us get through those really difficult periods.

“It’s a difficult situation for him, as he is the type of player who likes to be on the field and playing games. We have to support him through this difficult period.”
