Jake Forster-Caskey was ‘perfect sub’ in Charlton’s EFL Cup win – as boss quizzed whether he is close to greater league involvement
Charlton Athletic manager Ben Garner has praised Jake Forster-Caskey’s impact in last night’s EFL Cup victory over Stevenage.
The midfielder replaced George Dobson for the final 13 minutes of normal time.
Fellow substitute Chuks Aneke struck a late leveller for the League One side to take the tie to penalties – Scott Fraser converting the clincher after Joe Wollacott saved from Jake Taylor.
Forster-Caskey came on late on in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Coalville Town at the weekend but has struggled for game time in the league.
The Addicks were happy for him to move on in the last transfer window but a deadline day move to AFC Wimbledon was not completed in time before the cut-off.
Asked whether Forster-Caskey was pushing his claim for League One involvement – especially with rival Conor McGrandles coming off at the weekend due to injury – Garner said: “It doesn’t matter whether it is league or cup – I pick the team I feel is right for the game.
“He was a perfect sub tonight, for the situation we were facing. He came on and gave us poise and creativity in his range of passing.
“I will make the changes I feel is right – in any game.
“Unfortunately Conor has picked up a bad ankle injury and we’re so disappointed for him. It’s been such a tough start for him – he’s not got going.
“I don’t think Charlton fans have seen anywhere near the best of Conor McGrandles. All I would say to everyone is don’t judge him on what you’ve seen – he is a top player and top character. We need to support him through his rehab now and then get him back and playing, because he can be a fantastic player for us.”
